The BCI Forecaster is a leading monthly indicator of construction contract values<\/a> hitting the market in the upcoming three months. Construction start values are presented Australia-wide, broken down by civil and building construction as well as by five key states and six key building sectors\/project categories.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The construction market <\/span>remains<\/span> vulnerable to <\/span>a number of<\/span> pressures such as <\/span><\/span>build costs<\/span><\/span><\/a>, delays, business confidence, and rising interest rates or borrowing costs. This edition, total construction starts are seen to sustain the long-<\/span>term trend at a steady pace of 2%, thanks to both building and civil sectors <\/span>maintaining<\/span> their trajectories. On the <\/span>other hand, the gloomy short-term percentages are <\/span>largely influenced<\/span> by high-value projects in the previous quarter <\/span>that are casting a shadow on the values from the most recent three months.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The residential sector continues to ease back, but the other categories can be seen rebounding in this edition. From <\/span>the community sector, we have previously reported the projects supporting its healthy activity. For this period, notable <\/span>community projects pushing through to construction are the CEP \u2013 Mackay Base Hospital Expansion<\/a> (PID <\/span>306731017), the CEP \u2013 Cairns Hospital Expansion<\/a> (PID 306725017), the CEP – QEII Hospital Expansion (PID <\/span>292726017), and the CEP \u2013 Townsville University Hospital Expansion<\/a> (PID 290937017) in QLD. From the office <\/span>sector<\/span>, which is also <\/span>maintaining<\/span> a positive trajectory, the upcoming construction of the Atlassian Global Headquarters\/<\/span>Tech Central Sydney (PID 225060017) in NSW is livening up the sector.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The civil construction starts this quarter are characterized by the influence of a major project we have previously reported \u2013 the AUS$ 8.6Bn Woodside\/BHP Billiton JV \u2013 Scarborough to Pluto LNG Plant (PID 158751017) in Exmouth, <\/span>WA. Although the project continues to distort the readings for this edition, we have reported key utilities projects that <\/span>are helping to boost current figures \u2013 Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre \u2013 Stage 1<\/a> (PID <\/span>252401017), and Woodside\/BHP JV \u2013 Scarborough Umbilical Risers & Flowlines (PID 163959017). In addition, we <\/span>have reported the commencement of <\/span>Wambo<\/span> Wind Farm (PID 209335017).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
