The BCI Construction League New Zealand 2024

In 2023, New Zealand’s construction industry struggled with severe labour shortages and skyrocketing material costs creating significant pressure on project budgets and timelines.

Despite facing mounting challenges, the construction industry has remained a cornerstone of New Zealand’s economy, consistently driving employment and economic growth.

The latest BCI Construction League report showcases builders who have demonstrated remarkable resilience in navigating these obstacles while spearheading advancements across New Zealand’s built environment.

In 2023, New Zealand’s top 50 builders collectively commenced construction on 612 projects valued at a combined NZ$8.4 billion. The lion’s share of 283 projects, valued at just over NZ$4.8 billion, were undertaken by the League’s top 10 firms.

Our newest frontrunner not only entered the top 10 for the first time this year but also clinched the coveted 1st place in the League, boasting an impressive portfolio of over NZ$820 million worth of construction commencements.

Additionally, four construction firms secured their debut in the top 10, claiming the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 10th spots respectively, contributing a combined $2 billion in project values to the League table for the year.

Over 40% of the projects commenced by the Top 10 builders were located in the Southern Region. Of the 283 projects undertaken collectively by these builders, only 16 were residential, with seven of the builders not starting any residential projects in 2023.

“Within the top 10 builders as a collective, only 6 per cent of project commencements in 2023 were in the Residential (3+ houses/units) space, while 31 per cent were in the Community sector. The top performing sector amongst the top 10 was Commercial at 38 per cent,” BCI Central, ANZ Research Manager, Sarah Murphy, said.

“Housing has become a key priority amid a severe shortage, worsened by the Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. Community housing construction will play a vital role, supported by government initiatives like the Public Housing Plan and Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga for the delivery of Māori-led housing.”
