Life at BCI: Ian Harvey

Where in the world are you and what do you do?

My name is Ian Harvey. I’m a Business Development Manager for BCI here in Melbourne, Australia.

What brought you to BCI?

I was previously at Glenigan in the UK for nine years, and I had the State Manager of Victoria reach out to me at the time, and went through the interview process [and] was successfully offered the job. Glenigan, part of the Byggfakta Group, [has] got a very similar offering to BCI. And so there’s lots of synergy there between my experience and what I can offer for BCI moving forwards.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety of businesses that we deal with, the fact that we’re delivering a solution for those companies to help them grow their businesses, and, of course, the commission that this job brings in.

Who or what inspires you in your career?

Meetings when you’re genuinely solving a problem and helping companies with what they’re looking to do with their growth plans. Always, I find those meetings particularly empowering. That and having lots of coffee. Lots of coffee.

What is a fun fact about you that others might not know?

Back home in Europe, I go snowboarding every year. However, here in Australia, there’s actually ample opportunities to do the same, both within Australia and Japan, which isn’t too far away for some serious deep powder. New Zealand is also on the doorstep, and even Tasmania’s got some snow fields, so I’ll still be keeping that up.

What is the best career advice you have ever received?

To be curious, especially with your clients, and to be a good listener.
