Community Sector Snapshot Report in New Zealand 2024

BCI’s community sector snapshot report in New Zealand captures the total number and value of active projects across the country, as of January 2024.

Community Sector Project Analysis

As reported by BCI, 2022 marked the lowest number of design applications submitted in the community and cultural sector across New Zealand in the last five years, with only 120 projects being submitted for approval. This number increased by 52.5% in 2023; despite the upwards trend in applications, the number of construction commencements, having dropped to just 95 in 2022, has remained on a steady decline over the last year.

Even with this recent downward trend, New Zealand’s community and cultural sector, as of January 2024, has over 450 active construction projects, totalling more than 4 billion NZD. Approximately 47.19% of the total number of projects can be attributed to those in the Design & Documentation stage of construction. This corresponds with almost half (47.04%) of the total value of community and cultural projects belonging to those in the same stage, Design & Documentation.

Looking at the projects broken down by region, we can see that there is not a lot separating the Northern and Southern Regions in terms of total value and total number of projects. Both regions boast over 160 projects, worth more than 1.6 billion NZD a piece. The Central Region has a total of 123 active community and cultural projects, but these projects amount to just over 875 million NZD, almost half the value of its northern and southern counterparts.
