Australia’s Top Builders Thrive Amid Economic Challenges
The Construction League has become a critical benchmark for understanding the direction of Australia’s construction sector, providing insights into where capital is being allocated and which firms are poised for growth.
This year, Australia’s top 10 builders collectively launched over 270 projects, valued at more than $18.6 billion, underscoring the resilience of firms able to adapt to the evolving market.
Across the top 10, community and commercial sectors saw pullbacks, but this reflects a shift towards more targeted civic investments and flexible, future-ready assets. Residential commencements more than doubled from the previous year in both value and number of projects.
Despite ongoing economic pressures, the focus is increasingly on delivering high-value, technically complex projects rather than sheer volume.
Leading the League is a firm that secured over $3.4 billion in project commencements across just 11 projects.
In second place, another key player initiated 72 projects valued at just over $3 billion, further cementing its reputation for sustainable, complex developments.
Other top performers include firms that have maintained solid project pipelines, particularly in metropolitan areas where demand for healthcare, education, and premium commercial and residential spaces remains strong. Several new entrants to the top 10, known for their ability to execute sophisticated, tailored projects, reflect the growing opportunities for builders with the technical capacity to handle complex demands.

Across the broader market, Australia’s top 50 builders commenced construction on $33.1 billion in new projects in 2024, a slight decline from the previous year’s $36.1 billion.
While the softer headline number suggests a more selective funding environment, it also highlights the ongoing strength of firms with expertise in delivering ESG-compliant, innovation-driven projects, especially in public infrastructure and niche private developments.
“The market may be maturing, but this isn’t a sign of contraction—it’s a shift toward smarter, more strategic growth,” said Ashleigh Pattison, Director of Project Content APAC at Hubexo. “It’s no longer about chasing sheer volume. Builders must have the technical depth and delivery models in place to succeed in an increasingly complex landscape.”
As priorities evolve, builders with the agility to adapt to changing expectations—whether through innovation, sustainability, or community-focused outcomes—are well positioned to capitalise on emerging opportunities.
In this rapidly changing environment, access to real-time construction data has become indispensable. Builders are relying on live intelligence to manage procurement risks, stay ahead of regulatory changes, and adjust to shifting market conditions faster than ever before.
“In my recent discussions with the leaders of Australia’s top construction firms, one thing has been clear, success hinges on creating certainty—for their teams and their clients—by getting involved earlier, sharing experience and managing risk collaboratively from day one,” said Ashleigh Porter, President, APAC at Hubexo.
“The firms at the top of the 2025 League are not just those launching the most projects—they are the ones that are best positioned to thrive in the new construction economy. In today’s landscape, real-time insight is no longer a luxury—it’s a baseline requirement.”
