New Zealand’s Top Builders Thrive Amid Economic Challenges
The Construction League has become a critical benchmark for understanding the direction of New Zealand’s construction sector, providing insights into where capital is being allocated and which firms are poised for growth.
This year, New Zealand’s top 10 builders launched 256 projects worth over $5.2 billion NZD in 2024, reflecting a move toward larger, more complex builds—a trend likely to continue amid tighter margins and rising competition.
Taking the top spot in 2025 was a prominent player, securing $1.2 billion NZD in project commencements across 31 developments.
In second place, a national player with a reputation for delivering both public and private sector works launched 94 projects valued at $828.9 million NZD. The firm’s expansive geographical reach and capacity to deliver diverse projects have played a significant role in its continued success across New Zealand.
Holding steady in third place, another firm demonstrated its ability to maintain a solid project pipeline, overcoming the challenging conditions of the past year. This company’s adaptability and refined approach to project delivery have helped it maintain its competitive position despite external pressures.
This year’s League also saw the entry of several new players into the top 10, including firms making strides in key sectors. Among the notable new entrants was a company that made its debut in the top 10, securing a position with just two projects totalling $251 million. This marks a shift towards a greater emphasis on large-scale, high-value developments.

The broader top 50 builders in New Zealand commenced 884 projects in 2024, with a combined value exceeding $8.5 billion NZD. While the overall number of projects was lower than in previous years, the complexity and value of these projects have significantly increased, indicating a market shift towards more sophisticated developments.
“The data from this year’s League demonstrates a clear pivot towards high-value, strategically significant projects,” said Ashleigh Pattison, Director of Project Content APAC at Hubexo. “The firms in this year’s rankings are not just responding to the current challenges—they are positioning themselves as leaders for the next phase of development.”
To move up the rankings and win more work, builders are embracing tech and data to boost efficiency, cut risk, and make smarter decisions. In a tight market, digital tools give them the edge to take on more complex projects and stay competitive.
Ashleigh Porter, President, APAC at Hubexo, noted that the latest Construction League illustrates how the industry is meeting adversity with resilience and innovation.
“These top firms are defining the pace for the sector. They are not only fulfilling the demand for vital infrastructure—they are advancing their own reputations and capabilities for the future,” Porter said.
“Activity has slowed in parts of the market, but the country’s leading construction firms are responding with a sharper focus on early contractor involvement and tighter risk management. As the landscape shifts, companies are rethinking how they deliver projects—and how they build resilience for the future.”
